Vilfredo Pareto worked as an economist in 19th Century Italy. We can still use his theories in today's 21st Century Internet economy !

His 80-20 law applies to many things, including Time Management. For example, his law says that 20% of your customers provide 80% of your revenue. It says 20% of your time spent on a project gets it 80% towards completion. 80%
of people working in the computer business only do about 20% of the work, and the other 80% is done by the 20% star workers !

So how does this law apply to time management ? How can you use it to save 2 hours every day ?

Think about any jobs you must do. Think about any projects you're working on or about to start. We all want to do the best possible job. But how about this ? How would you like to get three jobs done in the same time as one ? How would you like to finish one job a lot quicker, and spend the extra time with friends or family ?

Pareto's law can help you do exactly that !

First of all look at the 'big picture' of your project. What are you trying to achieve and why ? What main benefits do you want ? Make a simple schedule of work. Get started and work as quickly as possible. It could be a report on a new market. It could be a new product specification. Maybe you've got to write a simple piece of software ?

When you've done all you can, stop and take a look. It's good isn't it ? Now leave it there. Yes, I said leave it there. You've achieved about 80% of your target. Yet you've only spent about 20% of the time you'd eventually give to that piece of work ! What would you normally do ? More research. Try to add in more bits. Endlessly fine- tune it. Perhaps you'd start again because you decide it's no good ?

Leave it at 80% and start with something else productive. Follow the same procedure with the next task, and then the next task.

If you use Pareto's law your productivity will go through the roof ! Your results will amaze your colleagues and yourself ! Suddenly people will start saying, "How does he get so much done ? How does she work so efficiently ? I don't understand how he's getting these great results, when I saw him in the park playing with his children yesterday!"

Pareto's law works. Start using it today, and see your productivity soar !

Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil

Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil
Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his "Savannah story," and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured focus on the wonderful eccentrics of Savannah, most notably a gay Savannah antiques dealer (superbly played by Kevin Spacey), who may or may not have killed his friend and alleged lover (Jude Law). John Cusack plays the Town & Country journalist who arrives in Savannah to find much more than he bargained for--including the city's legendary drag queen Lady Chablis (playing "herself")--and John Lee Hancock's smoothly adapted screenplay succeeds in bringing Berendt's characters vividly to life with plenty of flavorful dialogue. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Real characters

If you didn't know it, you'd think that this was a made up story. However, it is based on a true story and real characters that live and/or work in Savannah. You will laugh, you'll love the music, and you'll enjoy the true story it is based on. Thank you Mr. Eastwood.

The Secret (Extended Edition)

The Secret (Extended Edition)
Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini
